It is a competition which aims to encourage the development of oral communication skills among students and promote the use of clear English. The competition is divided into two sections: the prepared speech and the impromptu phase. In the first section, contestants deliver a prepared speech of six minutes on a given topic. In the second, they are asked two questions about the speech they delivered. The presentations are judged based on specific aspects, such as intelligibility, originality, suitability, coherence and persuasiveness. Another aspect of great importance is the use of clear and appropriate English. This year the topic chosen is “Youth: Time to chase after your dreams”.

Public Speaking Competition

 

Objectives:

  • To encourage the development of oral communication skills among students

  • To promote the use of clear English

  • To promote better understanding between young people

 

1)     The competition format

The competition has two rounds, the Qualifying Round (eliminatória) and the Final Round. Each round is divided into two sections, as follows:

 

1.1  Section 1:  Prepared Speech

For Section 1 contestants are to observe the following rules:

 

  • Contestants deliver a four-minute prepared speech on the given topic: “Youth: Time to chase after your dreams.”

  • Contestants are not allowed to read their speech

  • A warning bell sounds at three minutes and a final bell at four minutes

 

1.2  Section 2:  Impromptu Speech

For Section 2 contestants are to observe the following rules:

 

  • Contestants may be asked two questions about the topic which they developed

  • The time allowed for the impromptu speech is one minute;

  • A warning bell sounds after 45 seconds

 

2)     The Final Round

The final round will take place on Thursday, October 31st 2013, in the morning, in the Library, as part of the Escola Aberta event. 

 

It does not conflict with any other Escola Aberta event, so everybody can participate.

 

3)      Judging Criteria

The Prepared Speech will be judged according to the following criteria:

 

3.1   Subject Matter

  • Is the subject matter of the speech suitable and substantial?

  • Is the speech original and intelligent in its exploration of the theme?

  • Does the speaker develop the argument and line of thought logically and effectively?

  • Is there a satisfactory conclusion, which lends a sense of finality to the speech?

  • Does the speech carry a worthwhile and convincing message?

 

3.2   Use of clear English

  • Is the message or point of view conveyed in clear, correct, comprehensible and appropriate language?

  • Are tone, pace, pauses and projection effective?

  • Is the speaker’s style confident, fluent and natural?

 

3.3  The impromptu speech will be judged according to the following criteria:

  • Does the speaker demonstrate the ability to think clearly and creatively?

  • Does the speaker express his or her views with conviction?

  • Are the speaker’s remarks accurate, relevant and interesting?

  • Does the speaker use clear, correct, simple and fluent speech?

 

4     Prize

The winner will be awarded a special prize.
